Episode 140: Lessons from 2021 and Improvements in 2022—with Deb Zahn
2021 was another doozy! But before you run screaming from it...
It's worth taking a look back to grab anything useful you can find for 2022. Like you, I want 2022 to be better, even though there will still be uncertainty and disruptions—and I expect to have a lot of feelings about both!
So in the Craft of Consulting podcast, I share big lessons I learned in 2021 and what I plan to do differently in 2022 to account for what worked and what didn't this last year.

2022 may not be everything you want, but it can be better than 2021 if you apply the lessons you learned from the last year. In this episode, I talk about:
Deciding on your top priority, doing it, and then figuring it out how as you go along, instead of waiting until you know how it will work
Underestimating the impact of the prolonged pandemic, the state of the world, and other issues on my mental health and ability to function
Making adjustments to how I plan and work to account for lower functioning and based on an assessment of what’s working and what’s not
Implementing systems and getting help to free up your time and brainpower to do what only you can do
Considering ways to get tasks off your to-do list
Banning hourly billing in most contracts
Contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion work with your clients, even if that’s not what you do as a consultant
Leaving Instagram because I don’t want to contribute to what they are doing
Knowing that doing the right thing is always the right thing to do
Focusing on helping do-gooders do well in 2022
